Construction 1561 - 1618 (completed by the architect Martín Casillas)
The old parish of Santa María de Gracia (built in 1541) stood on this location, which after being named cathedral on July 13, 1548 on the occasion of the creation of the Diocese of Guadalajara by Pope Paul III. On May 30, 1574, it was partly destroyed by fire however construction continued slowly due to scarce funding. 1635, the second cathedral that was being constructed was greatly affected by excess moisture and had to be demolished. In 1818, strong earthquakes destroyed the towers and dome of the Cathedral but were quickly replaced. In 1863, the diocese was elevated to an archdiocese. Pope Pius XII elevated the cathedral to the rank of minor basilica in the mid Twentieth Century and dedicated it to the Asunción de María Santísima (Assumption of Mary).
Among the crypts below the royal chapel, is that of the bishops, which contains graves dating from the sixteenth century to the present See of Guadalajara. Here we see the headwall and foundations of the cathedral as well as coffins in which the remains of the Servants of God Don Francisco Gómez de Mendiola and Don Juan de Santiago León Garabito, bishops of Guadalajara, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
