The OLD CEMETERY in Río Piedras was established before 1812, when Obispo Juan Alejo de Arizmendi ordered the bodies from the "Quebrada de los Muertos" to be transferred to the church's altar (Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Pilar), which was not completely built at the time. By 1828, the Old Cemetery was still in use and expanded. Bodies were interred there until the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1910, don Joaquín Leandró Solís Amy donated the land near the road between Guaynabo and Bayamón, where the NEW CEMETERY, today called Cementerio de Villa Nevárez, was established. The bodies from the Old Cemetery, located by "Quebrada de los Muertos" (near today's Calle Amalia Marín) were not exhumated until 1935. By then the land surrounding the old cemetery had increased in value and several real estate people started a new project called Urbanización Santa Rita.
