The Church of St. Trophime is a former cathedral located in Arles, France built in the Romanesque tradition between the 12th and 15th centuries. It was built upon the site of the 5th century Basicila of St. Stephen. According to legend, the first bishop of Arles was Trophimus of Arles in the year 250. The relics of St. Trophime are moved from the basilica of St. Stephen in Alyscamps to the new cathedreal of St. Trophime in Arles in 1152. Frederick Barbarossa, Holy Roman Emperor is crowned by the Archbishop of Arles at St. Trophime Cathedral on July 30 1178. Charles IV was crowned king of Arles at the St. Trophime Cathedral on June 4 1365. The Bishopric was moved to Aix-en-Provence in 1801 and St. Trophime was reclassified a parish church. Pope Leo XIII raised it to the level of a minor basilica in 1882. The church was designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
