St Paul's is one of the oldest Presbyterian congregations in Ontario. Its first meetings were held in 1816 when Rev Mr William Jenkins conducted services in the barn of Hugh McLaren and in the house of Gilbert Bastedo, who settled in Nelson Twp in 1807. In 1822 Bastedo gave part of his 200-acre lot for the construction of a frame church.
In 1867 a brick church was built at a cost of $1,500. It's a fine example of a one storey front-gabled brick church with large gothic arched windows with interlocking lancet stone mullions, original panes of coloured pressed-pattern glass and brick hood mouldings.
The pioneer cemetery beside the church was established in 1817. The first known burial was Sarah Bastedo, daughter of Gilbert and Marion Bastedo, who died in 1817 at the age of 21 days. Many veterans of the War of 1812 are buried there. The cemetery is now under the care of the City of Burlington and the historic church is protected under the Ontario Heritage Act.
The congregation of St Paul's recently built a new church on land to the east of the cemetery. For a time the old building was used by the Burlington Free Methodist Church but they left and the building was sold to a private business.
