Städtischer Friedhof Steglitz
This cemetery in the Steglitz district of Berlin is managed by the city, therefore called "landeseigen". It was opened in 1875 and is still active. The area covers 272,762 square meters (67½ acres) and is located in the middle of the city. The main sight is a watertower, built in 1919 which is now no longer in use, but it remains a focal point in the cemetery. It's protected under Germany's Historic Monument Protection Act (Denkmalschutz) and was just recently renovated in 2005.
The cemetery also has a small little chapel.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever. As well as honorary graves, which are kept up and maintained by the city.
