Sighthill Cemetery is located on a low hill in the North-East of Glasgow. Its initial 12 acres were laid out in 1840 by the 'Sighthill Cemetery Company Limited' under the guidance of Mr. Stewart Murray with the first burial taking place on 24th April 1840.
The cemetery was originally organised in a radial fashion by distance & 'compass bearing' from a central point. However, this rather complicated arrangement proved difficult to operate & by 1893 had been replaced with a more conventional section & row numbering system.
Sighthill proved popular with the middle-classes & was by necessity extended in size to its current 46 acre site. Within its grounds, by the main entrance gate, is the distinctive Greek styled miniture temple & Mortuary Chapel designed by John Stephen.
A short walk from the Mortuary Chapel is the Martyrs Monument, erected by public subscription in 1847 to commemorate the executions in 1820 of John Baird and Andrew Hardie, radical reformers who struggled to improve conditions for textile workers.
The 'Sighthill Cemetery Company Limited' went into liquidation in July 1954 and the cemetery is presently managed by Glasgow City Council.
