Temple of Israel Cemetery is one of two Jewish cemeteries located off the beaten path in the tiny hamlet of Cranesville -- three miles east of Amsterdam close to the Mohawk River.
According to a 1992 newspaper article:
Historical documents indicate the congregation was established in October of 1873 when Amsterdam`s German Jews gathered for worship. The city was only a village at the time. Not the first Reform congregation in the Northeast, the congregation was preceded in the northeast by Albany congregation in 1838 and Schenectady in 1856.
In continuous use since 1901, their temple at 8 Mohawk Place in Amsterdam was placed on the national and state registers as an historical landmark in 1992. Sadly, the temple was sold in 2008. Per a news article at the time:
The Ministerio Esperanza, or Hope Ministry, has purchased the former Temple of Israel on Mohawk Place....The temple had sat vacant for nearly four years before the Ministerio Esperanza bought it.
The Union for Reform Judaism doesn't have any listing for this reform congregation in the Capital District. They aren't listed on the City of Amsterdam's website under "places of worship," either. Hence, it's not clear if the Temple of Israel and its cemetery are still active.
In any case, someone is definitely taking care of the property. The cemetery is in excellent shape.
