Royse's Lick Cemetery
Salem, Washington County, Indiana, USA
He was a hunter-trader and salt manufacturer. A fur trading station was near the spring. The water from the spring ran into the main fork of Blue River.
Efforts were made in early years to manufacture salt, though without success in greatly paying quantities. The land was leased to residents by superintendants appointed by the Governor. In the thirties the land was sold, and the proceeds were turned over to the Common School Fund. A store was established at Royse's Lick probably as early as 1808 by Dr. Simon Lamb, who did considerable trade with the Indians. The salt of the wells was, poor but it was in great demand. It sold as high as $12 a bushel.
Directions: From the Courthouse, go north on N. Main St. 0.2 miles to the intersection of SR 56, turn right, go 1.7 miles to the intersection of Quaker Church Road. Near this intersection, a little to the east, on the south side of SR 56, is a north-south fence row. This fence row is the section line between sections 15 and 16. Walk south, along the fence about one-half mile to the base of a bluff. Near here, along the bluff, to the west, is a spring enclosed on three sides by a rock wall. The cemetery was near this location.
This Cemetery does not exist today. No one knows who is buried here. A footstone marked M.P. was discovered along with evidence of other burials.
