There is a mound near the church which would appear to be the origin of "Castle" in the name of the village, "Thorpe" is the Norse name for a settlement. The church was rebuilt in 1350 but the oldest surviving part dates from the 12th Century. When the floor was replaced in 1976 traces of an Anglo-Saxon building were found which takes it's history back even further. Records show that the first Rector was Thurston Basset who was instituted in 1227.
