Construction began on the church building in 1731 with the first burial in the churchyard likely in 1734. In 1844, construction of a larger church building began and as the churchyard began to fill, a small extension was added in 1864 and further extensions in the early 1900s and 1930s.
The churchyard contains a number of "walled tombs...erected for the landed families of the parish" as well as burials of ministers, scholars, casualties of World War II and a number of men who died in the Redding Pit mine disaster of 1922.
