Add PhotosThe Communal Cemetery (Polish: "Cmentarz Komunalny"), located at Kaszubska 4 (street address) was the first modern cemetery of the city. It was founded as a parish cemetery in 1797 by the parish of St. Mary (German: St. Marien-Gemeinde). The site of this new cemetery was chosen with hills to the east on the right bank part of the city. On these hills, the so-called "Russian rampart" and a plantation of mulberry trees were already located, the plantation having been founded by a man named Strasburg, who was a teacher in the local Cadet School.
Since the cemetery was founded, the dead were no longer buried in the church of St. Mary nor in the medieval cemetery around the church (now St. Mary's Square). During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the cemetery was enlarged several times and it served as the city cemetery. In October 1896, the morgue building and chapel were opened - and these buildings still exist.
It is worth mentioning that the area on the side of Obrońców Wybrzeża street was used for burials by residents on the right bank part of the city, and the area on the side of Kaszubska street was used for burials by the Jewish community (where a funeral home building from that time has survived).
The cemetery is still in use today.
