Evergreen Cemetery was established as a private African American cemetery on July 1, 1928. When Smith Reynolds Airport acquired the property in 1944 to extend the runway, around 700 graves were relocated to the new Evergreen Cemetery, which was given to the city of Winston-Salem.
It had been believed that Evergreen Cemetery was relocated in its entirety, but some marked graves remain in a densely wooded area within the airport complex.
Confirmed Evergreen burials between 1928 and 1944 that are not in the database of the new Evergreen Cemetery are most likely still in this cemetery. The total number is unknown.
This cemetery's database includes those names that are documented as buried here, but have no record of re-interment in the new Evergreen Cemetery. However, there is no way to be certain that a grave was left here, as there were some graves moved that were unmarked and unidentified. Most, but not all, were the graves of infants.
After 1944, there were no new burials in this cemetery.
The cemetery is in a restricted area, and visitors must arrange for airport staff to escort them to the site. Because the area is densely wooded, with fallen trees, it is challenging to search.
Foy Cemetery is not Evergreen Cemetery. The last documented burial in Foy Cemetery was several years before Evergreen opened in 1928. No graves moved from the old Evergreen to the new Evergreen in 1944 had original burials documented in Foy Cemetery. Both cemeteries are located on Smith Reynolds Airport grounds.
