This was originally the site of an old medieval church dating to about 1120. An attempt to rebuild over the medieval church was made but the foundation would not hold a new building, thus the present church, which was finished 1841, is located across the street known as St. Margaret of Antioch Church. Only the west tower of the old medieval church remains. Within this old churchyard are many notable burials. Edmond Halley, who was the discoverer of the Halley's Comet; Nathaniel Bliss; and John Pond are buried in the Admiralty Vault.
