Add PhotosThe Convent of Nuestra Señora de La Merced was a significant Roman Catholic complex in the Historic center of Mexico City, constructed in the late 16th and early 17th centuries by the Mercedarian order. Unfortunately, much of the complex, including its church, was demolished during the Reform Laws in 1862, leaving only one cloister intact. This remaining structure, once a military barracks, has seen various uses over time, from a gymnasium to an art school.
Renowned artist Dr. Atl lived and restored parts of the building in the 1920s, contributing to its preservation. The cloister itself is celebrated for its captivating blend of Baroque and Mudéjar styles, featuring an ornate design with columns, arches, and intricate decorations. The central patio, surrounded by columns on two levels, showcases Doric-style columns on the ground floor and more embellished columns above. Each arch holds medallions depicting apostles or Mercedarian friars, while Baroque-style ornamentation adorns the spaces between the pilasters and the undersides of the arches. Despite its tumultuous history, the surviving cloister stands as a testament to the architectural beauty of its time.
