Add PhotosSt Pancras, Soper Lane, was built on land granted in 1379 and was located at the intersection of Soper Lane (now Queen Street) and Pancras Lane. It was destroyed in the Great Fire of London, 1666, and not re-built. The parish was subsequently attached to that of St. Mary Le Bow, but burials continued at the site until 1853. Excavations were performed at the site in 1963 at which time the width of the nave of the medieval church was revealed to have been 19 feet, 4 inches (about 6 meters). It is said that bones discovered during the excavation were reburied elsewhere, but no specific reinterment location has been noted. Today the site is surrounded on three sides by buildings, but the City of London transformed the small site of the original church into a garden. The beautifully carved Romanesque benches in the garden are the result of a competition between students of the City & Guilds of London Art School.
