A little known, but historic cemetery, is situated at the start of the Spragg Bush Walk which is at the junction of Scenic Drive and Mountain Road. The Following is a transcription from the small, and fast deteriorating plaque in front of the cemetery: This small cemetery was originally known as the Waitakere Cemetery. It was established in the 1860's and appears to have been the only public cemetery in the area until the Waikumete Cemetery was opened in 1886. The majority of those buried in the Waitakere Cemetery are believed to have been members of the Bethells, Colebrook and Russell families. It was the fern-covered graves of this cemetery which made such an impression on the Austrian naturalist Andreas Reischek when he passed by here on his way from the Henderson Mill to the Waitakere Falls on 1 April 1880.The Waitakere Cemetery officially remained open til 1928 but was effectively closed in 1906 when the Waitakere (illegible) was obtained to build the Waitakere Dam.
