Artist and industrial designer. Margaret Sauer was a classically trained artist, and sculptor. In addition to artistic creations, Sauer worked with automaker Hudson in fashioning their automotive interiors in the early 1950s, before being hired by GM's Harley Earl. At GM, she and nine other women were part of what Earl called his "Damsels of Design" group. While the women were paced in a variety of studios, Sauer worked on projects for Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac. The downside to the program was that most of the women, including Sauer, were used for PR, and many were assigned to projects intended to appeal to women, thus limiting their real abilities. After leaving GM, Sauer did work for Raymond Lowey during his last design contract with Studebaker by designing the interior of the Studebaker Avanti. In addition to her hands-on career in the auto industry, Sauer was a talented artist in sculptural design and featured in museum shows focusing on her artistic works. Sauer taught art at the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) in Columbus, Ohio, the Macomb Community College, and the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Following her death, a fund was established in her name at Macomb Community College for students wanting to pursue art as their course of study.
