Janet was the only child of Ralph Beaver and Virginia Spitler. She grew up in Arlington, Virginia and attended Mary Washington College. It was there she met Eric Torsell, they married in 1965. Janet and Eric moved to Williamsville, New York in 1974, where she lived the rest of her life. They had seven children: Arlene, Kirsten, Margaret, Deborah, Paul, Emily, and Brian. Sadly, she was taken too soon, passing away due to cancer on her 52nd birthday.
