Ruth Stockdale was united in marriage to James "Ed" Stockdale of Estherville, Emmett County, Iowa on February 8, 1908. After her husband became mayor, she was First Lady of Estherville from April 3, 1911 to April 7, 1913.
They were members of the Grace Episcopal Church in Estherville.
Ruth enjoyed music and sang at many functions. She directed the choir at the Episcopal church for many years, and was also a member of the P.E.O.
Ruth was my grandmother on my father's side. My father is the child in the third picture. When I was a child, my sister and I would sneak into her dresser just to smell the perfumed sachets that she placed in the drawers of her dresser with her personals. Always the epitome of an elegant lady, I remember her having cloud-soft skin and the bluest eyes I have ever seen. She always had fresh cookies from the corner bakery in her bottomless cookie jar.
