Ernest Noyes Brookings enlisted in the navy and fought in World War I. He was also one of the Telescope Makers of Springfield, Vermont and one of the original members of the Stellafane Club under founder Russell W. Porter. In his later years he became a poet. His book of poetry titled "We Did Not Plummet Into Space" was published in 1983 when he was 85 years old. Various bands even put music to many of his lyrics.
