Thomas Rutherford Trowbridge, the oldest son of Henry & Harriot (Hayes) Trowbridge, was a prominent and upstanding citizen of New Haven. He was a graduate of Partridge's Military Academy in Middletown.

His father, Henry, was a sailor and started the company, "Henry Trowbridge & Son", which engaged in the West Indies trade. After the father's death, Thomas and his three brothers changed the company to "Henry Trowbridge's Sons". Thomas worked faithfully for the company until his death.

He also served on the board of several businesses including New Haven Bank, the Hartford & New Haven Railroad Co., The Security Insurance Co. and was secretary & treasurer of Long Warf Co. and secretary of Tomlinson Bridge Co.

During the Civil War, he contributed funds to the American government & was a true patriot. He was chosen as candidate for Lieut. Governor of Conn. under Hon. William A. Buckingham, but declined the nomination.

Thomas Rutherford Trowbridge & Caroline Hoadley were married September 11, 1834. She was the daughter of Capt. Simeon & Polly (Harrison) Hoadley.
