The cemetery was established in 1860 with several burials from that year. The oldest existing headstone is Elizabeth Mills May, age 2 years and 2 months. Many of the earliest burials were of young children as times were tough and infant diseases and childbirth deaths were common.
The cemetery is laid out in three main sections. The oldest is in the center of the cemetery on a small knoll which are surrounded by fences and a gate. Newer sections are in front (street side) and in back of the old section. The old and front sections are full save for family members, and the section in back is currently in use.
The most famous person buried here is Harry Liversedge, US Marine Brigadier General, whose troops took Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima during World War II which was highlighted by the famous photo of Marines rising the flag after taking the mountain. A native of nearby Volcano, there is a special plaque at the Volcano Armory honoring him. He was also a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
As with most of the older cemeteries, many graves are unmarked as the original wooden headstones have long since disappeared.
This is an active cemetery.
