Established in 1898, Riverside Cemetery is a non-profit, perpetual care cemetery. Located in the RM of Dauphin at the end of Riverside Road, the cemetery is supported by both the RM of Dauphin and the City of Dauphin.
Operations are decided by a Board consisting of two RM of Dauphin Councillors, two City of Dauphin Councillors and a Community Chairperson. The Cemetery's income comes from plot sales and interments. The office is located at the entrance of the cemetery to assist the public. (Source: RM of Dauphin)
On 27 August 2022, a granite monument was unveiled here to commemorate the fifteen Commonwealth Air Training Plan airmen who died while training in the area during the Second World War and who were buried in this cemetery. (Source: Manitoba Historical Society [Adapted])
This area was the focus of settlement by people with a variety of ethnic and national backgrounds, but especially for immigrants of Ruthenian / Ukrainian / Galician origins. That heritage continues to be celebrated in the area.
The story of the founding of the cemetery is told in the local history book "History of the R.M. of Dauphin", on pp 137f. The book also includes the stories of many families from the area from 1896 to about 1983.
Other parts of the story of the city as well as the surrounding Rural Municipality and its inhabitants including the most recent part of it since the early days of European settlement are told in various local history books produced in the last quarter of the 20th century, but the above-named volume and the one named "Dogtown to Dauphin" offer interesting insights that will provide perspective on them. Digital versions of the books can be found online in the University of Manitoba Digital Collections.
