The cemetery is broken up into two sections; the OLD section and the NEW section.
OLD SECTION - has a view of St. Catharines, and the old Welland Canal Seaway property. On clear day it's possibility of seeing Toronto across Lake Ontario.
A cemetery for a Lutheran and Presbyterian church – [aka] The Old German Church Burying Ground established about 1802. It was replaced by St. Peter's Anglican Church in 1838. In 1886, the cemetery was closed to new burials when nearby Lakeview Cemetery opened. Remains in the old church cemetery were move to Lakeview in 1923 when the land changed hands and was to be made into a reservoir for the fourth Welland Canal. One report pegged the number of graves from the Old German / St. Peter's Anglican to have been in the 900's, and it is possible all remains were not removed.
To get to the OLD section - take the entrance of the NEW Lakeview Cemetery Section - 3651 Thorold Townline Rd, north of Thorold Stone Road. Drive west through the new cemetery section to the west entrance onto New Cemetery Road. Drive about 5 min. to reach the OLD section.
NEW SECTION - is a direct mirror image of the OLD section; due to during the 1960's an expansion of the Welland Canal was planned and the remains located in the OLD section were to be moved. This plan fell through, but, just in case, there are no spaces available for new burials in the OLD section; nor can anybody be buried in the corresponding new section.
The NEW section contains scatter gardens, a mausoleum and columbarium.
