A heritage sign placed by the council on site stated "The New South Wales Government proclaimed Goodna Cemetery as a Cemetery in 1859. The earliest tombstone dates back to 1864, but the first recorded burial did not occur until 1873. In the 1940s when a road was being constructed 192 bodies of former Woogaroo patients were exhumed and relocated to the Goodna Cemetery. In 1970 the remaining headstones at the Asylum were also transferred to the Goodna Cemetery".

Some of the headstones of Woogaroo patients have been grouped together. At one point a number of the original metal grave number indicators that came from the Woogaroo Cemetery were gathered together and placed in two groupings to commemorate the patients. They do not mark the actual burials.

The Goodna Cemetery is managed by the Goodna Cemetery Trust. The cemetery is still very active. Land on part of the property has been leased by the trust to the Heritage Park Funeral Chapel and Crematorium which is managed by a private company and operates separately.
