In 1803, a group congregants from the First Baptist Church met at first for worship in a Masonic lodge in York court in the Northern Liberties. During the few months they remained there, their number increased rapidly increased. Towards the latter part of the same year, the congregation received permission from the mother church to constitute as a separate church, called the Second Baptist Church. That same year, the congregation erected for their use a neat brick building, 66 by 47 feet on the west side of Budd Street, now called New Market Street, above Poplar Lane. A lot was also marked off and fenced in for a burial ground in the rear of the meeting-house. This place of worship was dedicated December 15th, 1803. Some publications later referred to the church as the "Hope Baptist Church."

 

Late in 1817, following the departure of popular pastor William White, 76 congregants left Second Baptist to from a new church at New Market and Noble Streets — the New Market Street Baptist Church. 

 

When the congregation looked to relocate after the Civil War, some 300 burials here were removed to Ivy Hill Cemetery. The building was sold in 1873 to the Congregation Ashe Emeth for a synagogue. Later converted for industrial use in the 1960s, it was demolished in 2013.
