The fist black burial ground in Philadelphia was located in the now historic Congo Square area. In 1782 there was a petition to the city to have the area fenced but it was either denied or never acted on. It is most likely lost to history.
Lebanon Cemetery, 19th Ave and Pussyunk was started in 1849. Plagued by body snatchers late in the century and extreme overcrowding, it was condemned in 1899 and in 1903 when Eden Cemetery opened, bodies were reinterred there. Unfortunately except for those families who could afford to move their relatives most were just dug up and moved without care as to names or dates and horror stories of skulls being hauled off by school children and bones piled in boxes were reported.
Several hundred African American soldiers from the United States Colored Troop (USCT) were originally interred at Lebanon. When Philadelphia National Cemetry was expanded in 1885, those soldiers were moved to Section C at the Narional Cemetery.
