Add PhotosThe Huffnagle family interments were publicly detailed in the years 1916 and 1917. An account appeared in the Trenton Sunday Times Advertiser, Oct 15, 1916 in an article entitled, "Old Mansion Near New Hope, Once Home Still Burial Site Of First American Consul To India, Now Sadly Neglected":
"William Ashton, a retired carpenter, 70 years old also remembers both of the Huffnagles. ‘I was a boy of 15 when the body of Dr. Charles was brought from London to be buried. The funeral was held in the big house yonder, and was the largest ever seen in New Hope up to that time or since. He was buried in a vault in the grounds as his father and mother had been before him. There was a lattice work fence around it at one time, but there is nothing to mark the spot now.'"
In his 1917 address to the Bucks County Historical Society, Col. Henry D. Paxton elaborated on the burials:
"I have here a melnorandum made by one of his {Dr. Charles Huffnagle's} family which shows that his body was buried in a cement vault, along with his mother, Sarah E. Huffnagle, and there were also buried near them at Springdale, John Huffnagle, his father, and Charlotte Huffnagle, an aunt, who died at the age of 90 years. No stone or tablet now marks their final resting place, which I believe was their wish, and the location of their interment is known to few persons other than members of the family."
(The Huffnagle Mansion and Its Collection, Col. Henry D. Paxton, A Collection of Papers read Before the Bucks County Historical Society, published for the Society by Fackenthal Publication Fund. 1917. Vol IV. )
