Meadow Lane Burial Ground
Also known as Friends Burial Ground , Water Lane Burial Ground
Leeds, Metropolitan Borough of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England
Early Society of Friends records refer to this location by the former street names of Meadow Lane or Water Lane. It was also the site of the Brighouse Monthly Meetings.
This was the location of the Camp Lane Court Meeting House (aka Leeds Meeting House) built by the Society of Friends in 1699 and is shown on the 1852 ordnance map for Leeds. It was recorded in 1665 within the Pontefract Monthly Meeting, from 1669 within the newly formed Brighouse Monthly Meeting, and from 1924 within the Leeds Monthly Meeting.
A burial ground was already on site at the time the Meeting House was constructed in 1699. The Friends had been meeting in Leeds as early as the 1650s. Like other cemeteries within the urban area of Leeds, an Act of Parliament passed Oct 19 1854 ordered that the Friends Burial Ground be closed to further burials effective 1 July 1856, although it seems that burials continued for few years after this deadline.
Meetings at Camp Lane Court continued until a new Meeting House was opened at Carlton Hill on Woodhouse Lane in 1868. The original Camp Lane Court location was then used for various adult and children day schools operated by the Society of Friends. A new building for the schools was constructed on a corner of the burial ground in 1877.
These schools continued well into the 20th century, but in 1946 the site was sold to Leeds City Council. The buildings were initially used for storage of City Museum artifacts. By 1967, the property had been cleared of buildings and redeveloped for road works and commercial properties.
Original headstones from the burial ground were moved to the Friends Burial Ground at Adel where the headstones were buried face down, and later covered with tarmac for a parking lot. There is no indication that original interments from the Camp Lane Court were also moved to the Adel burial ground.
