Provincia di Genova
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Staglieno Cemetery in Genoa is the largest outdoor museum in Europe and holds the finest collection of late 19th and early 20th century Italian marble sculpture. Opened in 1851 and still very active, Staglieno covers more than 3.5 million square feet and has over 117,000 grave sites. Within the walls of Staglieno are included Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, and Jewish cemeteries and a small Muslim section. There is also a large British war cemetery. There are 758 chapels and arched niches in the galleries, each 16 feet tall and filled with a major sculptural memorial. The upper hilly wooded area, the "Boschetto" is filled with everything from small graves and larger tombs to multi-story Gothic family mausoleums.
