Torrero Cemetery is a cemetery in the Spanish city of Zaragoza located in the Torrero district.
The official opening of the cemetery was in 1834, when the land was blessed by the Archbishop of Zaragoza . Until then, burials were carried out on the grounds of churches , convents or hospitals in the city itself, which posed problems such as lack of space and hygiene. The advantage of its location (on the outskirts of Zaragoza), as well as the need for land for burial led to its opening. At first, and after many disputes, the cemetery was administered by the parishes and the city council jointly. However, from 1868 the control became exclusively administered by Zaragoza Ayuntamiento.
Throughout the 19th Century, the cemetery undertook successive extensions (1866, 1885, 1895). In 1883, a space for civil burial was created, attached to the cemetery. In the 20th Century, the cemetery again gained land (1911).
During the Spainish Civil War, Zaragoza fell from the beginning on the Franco side and there was a strong repression against the Republicans. There were numerous executions in the cemetery and the bodies were later buried in mass graves (exhumed in 1980). During these years, burial sections were created in the cemetery for the foreign troops of the Francoist side: a section for Italians, another for Muslims (oriented to Mecca), and one for Germans.
During the last half of the 20th Century and up to the present, the cemetery has continued to grow, with the last expansion carried out in 2002, opening of a new building to serve the public.
