The Saint-Charles-de-Potyze French National Cemetery is located on the east side of the N332 Potijze-Zonnebeke road, approximately 1.5 kilometres from Potijze village and 2.75 kilometres from Ieper.
The cemetery was created during the First World War and redeveloped in 1920, 1922 and from 1925-1929, when French soldiers were exhumed and brought here as a final resting place from the Flanders Front, the Yser river region and the Belgian coast.
The cemetery contains 3548 named military dead, 95 plots marked "Inconnu" (Unknown) containing 143 sets of remains from World War I, two unidentified French soldiers from World War II, and an ossuary (mass grave) containing the collected remains of 609 unidentifiable soldiers.
After the Great War many unidentified French soldiers were exhumed from here and reinterred in the ossuary at Le Mont-Kemmel. Some of the markers have deteriorated over the years and have become illegible (hence a number with question marks in the name), and these are in the process of being replaced.
The cemetery is 29,900 square metres in size. The French and Belgian national flags fly side by side in the centre of the cemetery.
