Notre-Dame Cemetery
Established in 1872 - Notre-Dame Cemetery is located at 75, boulevard Fournier in the Hull sector of Gatineau. After many several land owners, including Philemon Wright, the founder of the Township of Hull, 100 acres of land was sold to the Oblate Fathers of Mary Immaculate, who established a cemetery there, in 1866. Throughout the next six years, additional acreage surrounding the cemetery was procured and donated and in 1872, records of the cemetery began. Built in 1902, the entrance to Notre-Dame Cemetery is extremely impressive as it is a carved stone portal. This entrance is surmounted by a hammered copper statue of the Angel of death sounding the trumpet of the last judgment. This statue is the last important work by Quebec sculptor Arthur Vincent. Notre-Dame Cemetery is the largest of the six cemeteries managed by "Les Jardins du Souvenir." Les Jardins du Souvenir is responsible for the management and development of six Roman Catholic cemeteries in the Archdiocese of Gatineau, including Notre-Dame Cemetery, and all related services.
