The hospital was built in 1846 and on November 21, 1848, the first 5 patients arrived, to be housed in the Hospital for the Insane. The hospital was located at the corner of W. Washington Street and Tibbs Ave.
The cemetery is on the hospital grounds, and is in 4 sections. Burials dating back to the 1st burial on September 1905, and the last in September 1947.
Early burials were in the northwestern part of the hospital grounds, known as Section 1. A rectangle labeled "Cemetery" is barely seen in a grove of trees at the corner of Vermont and Tibbs Avenue. No names have been found for Section 1.
Sections 2, 3, & 4, were added, located on the west side of Tibbs Avenue near Washington Street, just south of the Mount Jackson Cemetery.
Burials in Section 2, were from 1905 to 1927. Burials in Section 3, were from 1928 to 1937, and the remaining burials in Section 4.
The hospital was finally shut down by the state in 1994.
