The cemetery was originally opened in 1941 and was then known as Geneifa New War Cemetery and intended to serve the Military Hospitals in that area. POW camp 306 was also established nearby.
After the end of hostilities 190 burials from the Qassassin African Cemetery were moved to Fayid due to the remote location of Qassassin making maintenance impossible.
Fayid continued in use as a garrison cemetery up to 1955 when the British and Commonwealth Forces left Egypt.
