"Sometime between the year 1852 when Mrs John Walker settled on the 10th concession of Maryborough township and the year 1866 a Methodist church was organized on the 10th concession.
Since there was no church building to worship in, property for the church was donated by Mr. John Walker on July 2, 1866, according to the Deed: one acre of land more or less, which is a part of Lot 9, Con. 10 of Maryborough township, was deeded for the sum of Five Shillings ( about $1.25) to the trustees of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The trustees were James Butterworth, Seneca Hamilton, John Moore, Edward Holborne, John Walker, James Martin and John Luxton.
On this lot at the north-west corner Bethesda church was built: and in the same year Bethesda Cemetery was established in the church yard.
According to the records Mrs John Luxton who died on May 25, 1862 was the first person buried in the cemetery. Apparently a few, including the above, were buried in the cemetery before the official deeding of the property.
Some thirty-four years afterward, it was deemed necessary that the cemetery be made larger and three-quarters of an acre more or less was donated by George Walker, a son of the previous donor. According to the deed, the property was transferred on April 6, 1900 to the following trustees of the church: Walter T. White, George Brooks, Richard Welsh, Thomas Walker, John Hambly and William Walker.
As the Bethesda Congregation had disbanded sometime previous to the year 1921, the church and shed were sold. This left the property entirely free of buildings. Sometime later a small tool shed was built.
On February 10, 1941 a meeting of the plot-holders was held in conjunction with a representative of the United Church of Canada. At this meeting it was agreed to hand over the ownership of the cemetery to the Community as a whole.
At the board meeting held April 17, 1943 the elected trustee board were Roy Fleming, chairman, John Murray, Chas. Ballard and Mrs. John Murray, Secretary-Treasurer.
As it was found necessary on account of limited space to once more increase the size of the cemetery, Mr. Keith Hammond donated two acres of land in the year 1957. This enlarged the cemetery to approximately four acres in size.
Alvin B. Snider of Brampton donated and erected an ornamental arch in the front of the cemetery in the year 1959, in memory of his parents.
In 1965 the beautiful chapel donated by Mrs. William Hill in memory of the Wetzel family was opened and dedicated.
Through the years many gifts of flower beds, shrubs and trees have been donated and today Bethesda is a beautiful, well cared for cemetery."
