Also in 1888, nearby land was dedicated as Bunnerong Cemetery in order to accommodate burials to be relocated from Devonshire Street Cemetery in order to make space for Central railway station. In 1901, thousands of graves and 2,825 tombstones were transferred to this new cemetery.
In 1938, The Eastern Suburbs Crematorium was opened.
In 1972, Botany Cemetery, Bunnerong Cemetery and Eastern Suburbs Crematorium were merged into Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park. Today it is "Crown Land" with a Board of Trustees appointed by a Minister of the New South Wales State Government.
In 1976, a large number of the original headstones transferred from Devonshie Street Cemetery were removed. The remaining 746 headstones were mounted on concrete strips unrelated to the graves below. This new lawn area was named Pioneer Park. In 2016, on the same date on which the First Fleet sailed from Portsmouth, England a new section of Pioneers Memorial Park was opened as the First Fleeters Memorial.
