This cemetery was originally known as the Hartland Burying Ground. The oldest known burial is that of Thomas Hall who died April 24, 1840. In 1864, Chauncey L. and Robert C. Crouse transferred about two acres of land to the Hartland Township Board of Health for burials. Today the cemetery occupies about 3.6 acres. Six veterans of the War of 1812 and twenty-four Civil War veterans have been identified as buried here. On Memorial Day Eve, a candlelight vigil is held with all veteran's graves marked. In 2006, a Michigan Historical Marker was placed near the cemetery front gate.

The Hartland Village Cemetery is cared for by the Hartland Township Board of Trustees.
