Established in 1874. This 12.67 acre Catholic cemetery is located in the southeast part of Hollister.
The Hollister Catholic community has a long history. The first Europeans to visit this area were Fr. Crespi ( good friend to Fr. Junipero Serra), 12 soldiers and one Indian who traveled from Monterey. Fr. Crespi named the river here St. Benedict or San Benito in Spanish. Until after the Civil War most of the spiritual needs were handled by nearby Mission San Juan Bautista. In 1873 Fr. Cipriano Rubio of San Juan Parish acquired a plot of land and began construction of Sacred Heart Church. In December of 1877 it became an independent parish with Father Hugh McNamee appointed resident Pastor. Within three months of his arrival he bought four acres of land two miles east of town for the parish burial ground. In 1901 Father. B Smyth was assigned to the parish and one of his first acts at Sacred Heart was to have the land Fr. McNamee purchased, surveyed and converted into a respectable burial ground. For many years it was always referenced as "Catholic Cemetery" but in 1901 it became Calvary Cemetery.
