Rockafield Cemetery is located on the campus of Wright State University about 500 feet northeast of the east end of Circle Drive/Rockafield Way. The cemetery was established as a family cemetery in 1830 and is named after the original landowner. The cemetery contained 45 gravesites on its original half acre plot. Of those original 45 gravesites, only a dozen grave markers, many in poor condition, remain.
The original half acre plot was expanded for university use in 1978 and approved as a legal burying ground. Burial in this newer portion of the cemetery is open to all donors of the Boonshoft School of Medicine's Anatomical Gift Program at Wright State University. It includes group interment sites for the cremated remains of donors of the Anatomical Gift Program. Please note that not all donors choose to be buried in Rockafield Cemetery and that all remains in this section are interred at the group interment sites. The interment sites, marked with bronze plaques bearing the year of burial, are located beside the brick walkway.
The beautiful brick walkway in this newer section is composed of memorial bricks that have been purchased by the families and friends of donors of the Anatomical Gift Program. Purchase of a brick is optional and may be made regardless of whether or not the donor chooses to be buried in Rockafield Cemetery. Memorial bricks bear the donor’s name, year of birth, and year of death. No cremated remains are buried under the individual bricks in the walkway.
If the Find a Grave memorial page doesn't contain plot information, please visit the Anatomical Gift Program Brick and/or Interment Site Locator. This database shows the name of the donor, the year of death, the interment site if it is within Rockafield Cemetery (Interred year), the location of a memorial brick if one exists (Zone letter, Row number), as well as a map showing approximate locations within the cemetery. You can also get a brick location over the phone from the Anatomical Gift Program at 937-775-3066 Monday through Friday between 8:30 and 4.
All areas of the cemetery are open daily to the public except during the annual Ceremony of Appreciation, when visitation is restricted to family and friends of the donors who are being honored.
The cemetery is located in Bath Township, Greene County, Ohio, and is #4227 (Rockafield Cemetery) in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003", compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
