In 1920, George Anderson became interested in the cemetery care and beautification. He made the cement posts which are standing today, put up a fence, built a cement block tool shed, and was instrumental in getting a road built to the cemetery. These are only a few of his works.
In 1951, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Saunders saw the need for more care and beautification. They planted trees, evergreens, hedges, and made flower beds. In 1953, they urged a group of interested persons to meet in the old Leonard Fire Hall and the Leonard Cemetery Association was organized. The following officers were elected: Joe Brown, President; I. P. Fenne, Vice President; Mrs. Frank Saunders, Secretary-Treasurer; Harold Bird, Mrs. Ed Floan, and Mrs. Harvey Peterson, Directors.
This association has added to the beauty and upkeep of the cemetery. The removing of cement borders for easier mowing and placing new bases around headstones was a project of Frank Saunders and George Scilley. Mrs. Joe Brown was Secretary-Treasurer for many years and the monument erected "IN MEMORY OF VETERANS BURIED HERE" was her dream. A flagpole was placed here for the United States and North Dakota flags.
George Hegg returned to Leonard and became caretaker. Crosses with the names of veterans are placed in front of the monument each Memorial Day. Edgerton Watts, a veteran of the U. S. Civil War, is buried in the cemetery.
In 1973, another monument was erected between the gates with "LEONARD CEMETERY" on it for identification. The lettering was given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brown by the family.
Officers of the association in 1976 were Anna Powers, President; Francis Saunders, Vice President; Mrs. Byron Taylor, Secretary-Treasurer; Harold Hahn, Lawrence Anderson, and Lamoin Nesemeier, Directors.
