George Edwards originally purchased 750 acres of land on 09 Aug 1806 from Nathaniel Fox. On 30 Nov 1830, George Edwards deeded 1/4 acre of this land for use as a public burial ground in Byrd Township. The deed states "...that the said George Edwards, taking into consideration the utility of a public burying ground hath given, granted, aligned and confirmed...that a parcel of land lying and being in Byrd Township, Brown County...containing one fourth of an acre of land for the express purpose of a burying ground and no other purpose whatever...doth bind himself, his heirs, executors and assigns unto the said School Directors and their successors in office."
The families buried in this cemetery lived in a close-knit community, intermarried and helped each other survive epidemics, hard toils and shared each other's joys and sorrows in the early settlement of Bryd Township. A line fence which intersects the rock wall midway, on the west side, was first erected by Jim Watson, who owned the land adjoining the cemetery on the north side.
The cemetery is located in Byrd Township, Brown County, Ohio, and is # 1058 (Old West Cemetery / Evans Cemetery / Baird Cemetery / West Cemetery) in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003", compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 1047743 (West Cemetery / Old West Cemetery).
