Greenwood Cemetery opened in 1869 when the Georgetown Village Council passed a bylaw making it unlawful to "bury any corpse within the limits of this Corporation save and except in the Greenwood Cemetery". The by-law was enacted as other cemeteries located within the town's boundaries were becoming filled to capacity and a new burial ground was necessary.
Greenwood also became the site of a number of re-interments. As cemeteries such as McCullough's, located outside the Georgetown boundaries, were closed, the deceased persons were often removed and re-interred in Greenwood. As well, some remains were removed from St. John's Church Cemetery in Stewarttown when Trafalgar Road was straightened in the early 1970s and a portion of that cemetery was appropriated for construction.
Some of the re-interments recorded in Greenwood have notes indicating the original interment location. There are other plots for which there is no information in the cemetery records and those plots may also contain some of the re-interments.
Section D is the oldest part of the cemetery, followed by sections A, B, C, E and R. The newer sections are F, G, H-I, J and M. Additions to the cemetery property were made in 1890, 1920, the 1950s and 1970. The original entrance to the cemetery from Maple Avenue was closed and the roadway area was sold as cemetery plots in section J.
All cemetery records prior to May 3, 1934 have been lost. Any information prior to that has been obtained from sketches and information kept by the cemetery caretaker or from plot owners.
Greenwood Cemetery is currently maintained by the Town of Halton Hills.
