To visit Oak Forest Cemetery, enter the Oak Forest Health Center. Follow the signs for parking for the Oak Forest Heritage Preserve (part of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County).
Cook County Cemetery served as the Cook County Potter's Field from 1911-1971. It was used for the burial of indigent and unidentified deceased people of Cook County during that time. There are over 90,000 burials in an open field, in unmarked graves. There are no grave markers or headstones.
In 1970, Cook County Cemetery, lacking additional space, closed permanently. Access is now restricted and permission must be obtained to visit the cemetery. Some 90,000 burials are known to have been made here.
