Adel is a suburb of North Leeds, West Yorkshire, and is situated near the site of a Roman fort, the ancient road from Tadcaster to Ilkley passing nearby. (The footpath by the side of Long Causeway was said to be made from the original Roman stones, until they were removed by the council in the 1960's).The Roman name for the area was Burgodunum and it is probable that a Saxon village sprang up around the fort and that a church was built in the village. The village is mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book as Adele. Another spelling used until 1816 is Addle. They derive from the Old English adela ‘dirty, muddy place'. In 1152 the nearby Cistercian abbey at Kirkstall was founded. At the same time, the church of St John the Baptist, Adel's parish church, was built to replace an older Saxon building and it has been described as "one of the best and most complete Norman churches in Yorkshire".In their love of simplicity or, conversely, their abhorrence of ostentation and one-upmanship, nineteenth century Friends required that all gravestones should be of the same material (Yorkshire sandstone) and of the same shape and similar dimension. They also specified the format of the wording permitted to be engraved on each gravestone in Adel Friends' Burial Ground, and no exception could be made in respect of the two wargraves here-the markers meet CWGC's obligation to adequately commemorate, it not being necessary to indicate service details or the fact that they are war graves.
