Young George Daniel Bottoms (Mem ID: 27200399) was the first grave in this new family cemetery, marked off in the very pasture where he had recently tended cows. George was an early casualty of a meningitis epidemic at Camp Wheeler, GA during World War I. As his grieving family stood in silence, the men of his senior class from the Agricultural School in Athens walked as pallbearers and the women of his class each lifted a spade of earth and let it fall in sad farewell to their fallen classmate and friend. The oldest headstone in the Bottoms Cemetery belongs to John J. and Elizabeth (Hensel) Overmyer (Mem IDs: 27200245 and 27200250). Their original graves were in the nearby Sand Spring area where they lived on their farm and John was appointed Postmaster in 1881. In 1990, however, Overmyer descendants relocated both graves and their headstone because the old cemetery had become a cow pasture and was not being kept up. The headstones were being knocked over and the cattle were not especially fond of visitors. The Overmyer descendants chose Bottoms Cemetery as a final resting place because it is well kept and other family members are buried there.
