Hopewell Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church Cemetery is one of the oldest burial places in Newton County. Many families across the USA trace their lineage through these memorials. Hopewell was founded in 1830 by pioneers from primarily Chester and Fairfield Counties in South Carolina. These Scots-Irish settlers came from Northern Ireland and migrated with their Presbyterian ministers to Charleston, SC in the mid-1700s and then to upper South Carolina. Many fought in the American Revolution. Hopewell was founded by children and grandchildren of the original immigrants. All graves face east toward Jerusalem as was the custom. The oldest grave is that of Archibel Burns (b. 1830). Several men here fought in the War of 1812. There is an African American area in the southeast corner that is marked by a memorial, but no individual graves are marked in this section. Church records dating from 1830 can be found on-line. These records give information about baptisms and communicants for both races. The cemetery currently has a perpetual care fund supported generously by descendants of those interred here. It is a beautiful place beside a beautiful church building.
