Starnberg is located at the Northern tip of Lake Starnberg (Starnberger See), about 30km South of Munich.
This forest cemetery is the largest of the 46 municipal cemeteries managed by the city of Starnberg. When visiting, be aware that parking is limited and one must walk a bit through the forest to get to the burial plots.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (5-40 years in Starnberg) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 15 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
The Waldfriedhof is the only cemetery where a "Baumbestattung" is possible in Starnberg: The cremains of a person are being buried in a bio-compatible container at designated trees for a period of repose of 30 years.
