Saint Mary's Church in the northern German city of Stralsund dates back to the 13th century. It's considered a masterpiece of Late Gothic architecture. Originally the main tower was 151m (about 500ft) tall and with that feature St. Mary's Church was the world's tallest building from 1625 until 1647, when the cathedral of Strasbourg in France was built. The building went through several changes and has been in its current state since 1708, when the collapsed tower was replaced with the current Baroque dome.
It was very common in Germany during the 18th century that wealthy families "purchased" their family burial plots inside a cathedral or abbey. Over 150 persons had been buried at St. Mary's over the duration of about 200 years. Some of the grave plates seem to have been re-used.
A few very rich families had "Family-Grave-Chapels" erected in side naves of the church. Those consisted of a grave chamber underground with a small chapel above in which the living family members congregated during church services to follow the sermon.
The church used to be surrounded by the Marienkirchhof, a cemetery which is now defunct. The northern part of the old cemetery is now the place of the Russian War Cemetery (Sowjetischer Ehrenfriedhof).
