Cemetery notes and/or description: The following “two” cemeteries are a mixture of one. They are located at the junction of Bernville Road (PA-183) and Old Bernville Road just east of Plumcreek Road in Bern Township, a little more than three miles west of the end of Runway 31 of Reading Regional Airport and five miles east of Bernville.
There are two cemetery sections associated with the Bern Reformed United Church of Christ. The one behind the church is the oldest, and was traditionally known as Bern Church Yard (AKA Berne), (Sesniak photos).
The second cemetery is newer and is located across the street (Diane Gibson Photo).
This historic site is set upon a hill, and the graves are primarily from the German families who first settled in the area of Bernville, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The original church dated to 1736, and was one of the first 30 German Reformed Churches in Pennsylvania. The current church was finished in 1958.
As there are no numbered or lettered plots, a lettering system was at one time established which suggested counting upwards from the bottom of the hill. This will help, but it is not exact, as the plots are not in straight lines.
You'll find many veterans, some dating to the American Revolution; most have flags and markers commemorating service. However, stones are weathered and hard to read. Please join in taking new pictures, so that we may preserve the memories of the persons buried at this historic church yard.
The Bern Reformed United Church of Christ is located at 3196 Bernville Rd, Leesport, Pennsylvania. For the history of this church, please see www.bernreformeducc.org
